Burmese video journalists
Joshua started working as a video journalist in Burma in 2005. He was one of the first video journalists on the staff at the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB). Headquartered in Oslo, the media organisation transmits live images from Burma via satellite. Joshua is the main character in the documentary film Burma VJ.
The Burmese video journalists' proprietary material is the primary source of information used in Burma VJ – Reporting from a Closed Country, directed by Anders Østergaard of Denmark. He gives viewers a close look at a number of Burmese video journalists who insist on keeping the flow of news from their closed country open, despite great personal risk. Joshua, age 27, works undercover in Burma.
In September 2007, Buddhist monks spearheaded a wide-ranging rebellion against the military regime. Joshua was abruptly thrown into the role of tactical leader for his reporting group. Foreign TV stations were refused entry into the country. It was left to Joshua and his group to document the events and keep the resistance alive on TV screens the world over.
Magic Hour Films of Denmark is the primary producer. Norwegian Mediamente is co-producer.
The Freedom of Expression Foundation, Oslo, provided NOK 304 500 in support for a pilot project on the establishment of a TV channel under the auspices of the Democratic Voice of Burma in 2004. A pledge of NOK 1 000 000 was granted for the start up of the TV broadcasts in 2005. The Freedom of Expression Foundation subsequently allocated NOK 2 000 000 in 2008 for the media organisation's activities in 2008 and 2009.
Magic Hours Film received NOK 300 000 in production support for the documentary film Burma VJ from the Freedom of Expression Foundation, Oslo, in 2008.
