Research on sensitive topics - between media and politics

Fritt Ord invites the public to a seminar on what it is like to participate in the social debate as a researcher in an inflammatory field, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 11 September 2018 at Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo.

Where do the dividing lines go between politics, media and science? What does it mean to communicate information about research in politically inflamed fields like migration and integration? Is it any wonder that a growing number of researchers are becoming hesitant about participating in the social debate? How is it possible to report on research when social science research is so often politicised?

Call for applications from libraries 2018-19: Ready, steady, debate!

Fritt Ord invites applications for grants of NOK 60 000 each for communications activities and discussions based on contemporary factual prose and fiction. For example, funding can be used for debates, seminars, talks with writers or discussion fora.

In recent years, libraries have taken on a whole new role as an arena for public discussions and debates by offering venues for events. Which new topics of debate can the libraries bring into the public space? Which relevant publications and authorships have the potential to capture the interest of a wide audience? Which topics of debate are of concern to young people today? Are there new forms of arrangements that inspire audiences to engage in dialogue and conflicts of opinion?

The history competition "My family in history"

Have you ever wondered about what it might be like to live in another time? Or what it was like to grow up in a society in which the standard of living was much worse than today? Perhaps you have parents or grandparents who have experienced war or great upheavals? Which opportunities and limitations were people subject to in the past? Did they act and think differently from us?

My family in history is being organised by the Norwegian Historical Society (HIFO) with support from the Fritt Ord Foundation. It is open to pupils in lower and upper secondary school. This competition revolves around everyday people, making them the main characters. Pupils are urged to investigate topics such as democracy, war and conflict, changing living conditions, migration and working life in the light of their own family history. Extremists on film: Propaganda or information?

Fritt Ord, Norwegian Film Directors and HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival 2018 invite the public to a debate on extremists in film on Tuesday, 13 March, from 5 to 7.30 p.m. at the House of Literature.

There is a great deal of talk about extremism – also in documentary films. Both at the cinema and on TV, Norwegian film-makers take us into communities with extreme attitudes and ideologies. What is it that attracts directors to these topics, and what do they achieve by making films that follow extremists closely? Do they become spokespersons for extreme attitudes or contribute to understanding and enlightenment?

Letters to Europe – Refugee Women Write

What: Theatre performance, debate and Oslo book launch.
When: Wednesday 28 February at 19:00
Where: The Fritt Ord Foundation,
Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo.

The refugee crisis in Europe has raised tempers and become a subject of debate in almost every country. A stereotype has evolved, painting the ‘young, male Syrian refugee’ as the typical asylum seeker. This narrative leaves little space to talk about the often widely divergent backgrounds and identities of refugees. It makes it easier to ignore refugee women, children, the elderly and their needs and role in the future of Europe.

Inequality, Immigration, and the Politics of Populism

The New York Review of Books Foundation, the Dan David Prize and the Fritt Ord Foundation invite the public to the two-day conference 'Inequality, Immigration, and the Politics of Populism'. The conference will take place at the New York University School of Law, USA, 28-29 October 2017.

Populist parties and movements, mostly on the right, are becoming a powerful force in both the United States and Europe. The ascent of Donald Trump to the US presidency is the most spectacular electoral success in American history for a militant form of right-wing populism. The gains made by Alternative für Deutschland in the recent German elections mark the first time since 1945 that a populist party of the extreme right has achieved significant representation in the German Parliament.

And how is it possible, under the rule of law, for someone to end up in legal limbo and de facto house arrest, without any indictment or judgment, as Julian Assange is experiencing in the Ecuadorian embassy in London?
